Error messages when using HMRC software
For those using HMRC’s own software to file their 2016 tax returns you need to be aware that the Revenue are currently trialling some changes. HMRC have identified 21 of the most common mistakes made in online returns and to address these the department has created three different types of messages to help taxpayers and reduce potential errors.
Permanent messages
These will be displayed above the relevant question to provide individuals with more information before they complete that section.
Warning messages
Will appear if a person has entered something which may be incorrect, e.g an entry made in two boxes and these appear to be inconsistent. The message can however be ignored or bypassed.
Error messages
Will appear if a person enters something which HMRC know is incorrect because of other information that person has included or excluded in the return. The entry will have to be amended before that person can file the return.
The trial is already underway and will continue until the end of the financial year. Due to there being a trial and control group split not everyone will see the new messages. HMRC will be evaluating the trial and use the results to shape their new digital services.
