Now that the New Year hangovers will (hopefully) have passed, and people across the nation will be already breaking their resolutions, it is time to look towards the year ahead.
What can we expect from 2012 then? There are big events that will affect both the contracting and wider world, and Contractor Weekly brings you some important dates for your diary, as well as some Contracting wishes for the new year!
Many people in the business world will be hoping for some stability in the, after the previous 12 months have seemed to bring nothing but negative headlines. The Eurozone crisis is far from over, but many will hope that 2012 will be a year of growth and fruition, rather than a repeat of a year that will not bring back fond memories. One does wonder whether Mr Cameron’s 2013 New Year’s address will be happier or gloomier than the 2012 version.
February 6th sees the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years with Elizabeth the Second as this country’s monarch. There will be various celebratory events taking place over the course of the year, including a special display of diamonds at Buckingham Palace. To more people’s taste, however, will be the extra Bank Holiday on 5th June.
A big year sports wise; 2012 sees the Olympics come to London between July 27th and August 12th. An historic event for the nation, the eyes of the world will fall on the capital this summer, and thousands upon thousands will travel to watch the events.
Euro 2012 will keep football fans entertained, and will be held in Poland and Ukraine. England’s first game is against France on June 11th, and the Republic of Ireland’s first game is against Croatia on June 10th. The Six Nations starts on February 4th, Wimbledon on June 25th, and the Tour de France on June 30th.
In world politics, the U.S. presidential election has started to receive more airtime in the media, and the next president will be announced on November 6th. A remarkably complicated process, Barack Obama is eligible to keep power for another four years and his campaign seems strong. Republican opposition will be coming from a variety of wonderfully named individuals all vying for their party’s candidacy, including Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum.
And to finish on a light note, you may have noticed talk of December 21st being the end of the world. Feel free to research the various theories and supposed phenomenon that will all occur next year. Whether or not you delay next year’s Christmas shopping is down to you, though it might be worth taking note of how often these apocalyptic proclamations have actually come true….
